From September to December 2009 the Rotterdam-based artists Jeanne van Heeswijk and Paul Sixta interviewed 25 participants from households in Goulburn and the Sydney suburb of Liverpool. They questioned these volunteers on how they have tried to reduce their waste.

The interview approach unearthed disparate responses and reasons for waste, from the practical and personal to the metaphorical. They revealed an increasing awareness of waste (or wastefulness) and individual frustrations at the enormity of this problem and its impact on their daily lives.

The artists then scripted and filmed a series of narratives based on these personal stories. The Talking Trash exhibition presents these 25 narratives in the form of three minute video fictions, alongside an installation of photographic stills and personal objects gleaned from the project’s participants.

Amnesia of a Landscape:
A day in the life of a countyroad

A project made by artists Jeanne van Heeswijk, Brechtje Schoofs, Paul Sixta, Aram Voermans, Marten Winters and historian Annet Van Otterloo

The project portraits an inquiery into the changing landscape perception due to the arrival of the new countyroad N470. This road now connects the Dutch cities of Delft, Zoetermeer and Rotterdam. During a phyisical journey along this road the project focuses on the mental aspects. What are a motorist thoughts? Will they change as the route and scenery changes? Will they bring their memories of the old road along to the new one? In an effort to visualize the changes in the landscape a 120 active motorists are cooperating to feature in this roadmovie. The roadmovie will show their mental journeys wich can be seen as individual mini roadmovies at www.eenbekendeweg.nl. Eventualy the 120 mini roadmovies will form a 12 hour movie; a day in the life of a countyroad.
